How to make Aloo Matar (Potatoes with Peas) – Indian Cuisine

We recently showed you how to make Punjabi Masala (in bulk). Here is a super fast Indian recipe for Aloo Matar (Potaotes with Green Peas) you can make using your pre-made masala. Let your imagination run wild…substitute any vegetable and create yet another delicious variation.

Ingredients:

Potatoes – 4 medium, 1/2 inch cubed
Frozen Green Peas – 16 oz packet
Oil – 2 tsp
Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
Punjabi Masala – 1/2 cup (1/2 sandwich bag)
Chaat Masala – 1 tsp
Salt – to taste
Red Chili Powder – to taste
Water – 1 1/2 cups
Cilantro – finely chopped for garnishing

Method:

1. Heat Oil in a pressure cooker.
2. Add Turmeric Powder and Punjabi Masala. Mix well.
3. Add Potatoes and stir to coat masala.
4. Add Salt, Red Chili Powder, Chaat Masala and Water. Mix well.
5. Close pressure cooker and cook until 1 whistle sounds. Turn off stove and allow the pressure from the cooker to come down.
6. Open pressure cooker and add Green Peas. Adjust salt and other spices as necessary.
7. Cook until Green Peas are no longer raw.
8. Garnish with cilantro and serve with chapati or rice.
9. Serves 6

Tips:

1. Less water can be added if you don’t require a lot of gravy.
2. The same preparation can be done without a pressure cooker. Cooking time may be longer.

  1. Want to make this aloo matar but don’t want to make the big batch of punjabi masala. I see the post where one would use one tomato and one onion, but what about the spices? Could you repost with the instructions for making the masala just for this dish?

  2. hi, can you please tell me how to make it if i dont have the punjabi masala, like when i should put the onions, tomatoes, garlic & ginger, tumeric and salt, in order?

  3. I use this website a lot and your recipes are awesome!!!!! I wanted to make this a richer dish and was wondering if I could add heavy cream to give it a richer gravy?? Thank you!

  4. if you don’t have the punjabi masala in bulk and are making it just for this recipe, would you still go through the same process of making the masala on the stove, and then follow the rest of the steps here ifor making the curry in the pressure cooker? Or does something different need to be done? Thanks!

    1. Hi Malavika,

You’d have to make the masala as we have shown in the Masala video and then put it in the pressure cooker and cook it as mentioned.

I was just wondering, can you give me the calculations to make the punjabi masala for a serving of 6? I am not interested in making a bulk. 9. Hello Ladies,

Since I didn’t make the punjabi masala, how much of the fresh onions/tomatoes would I need for this recipe?

  10. Hi Hetal,

It turned out more yummier this time and my son has made me promise that I will make this dish as often as possible! Thanks once again.

    Sudha

  11. Hi Sudha,

You can always add green chilies, red chili powder or more garam masala to make the dish more spicy.

  12. Hi Hetal & Anuja,

This dish tastes simply superb. But since my son loves food that is more spicy, hence could you kindly tell me how to make this dish more spicy?

    Thanks in advance,

    Sudha

  13. hello hetal & anuja,
like your site very much. would u be kind enough to mail me how to prepare punjabi masala in bulk. i missed it.
    regards,
    sujitha

  14. Hi Rathna,

Try boiling equal portions of white vinegar and water in a pot and letting it simmer for an hour or so. It should help neutralize the odors.

  15. I have made this aloo mutter around 4 times so far…I tried with the pre made pujabi masala and it came out so good every single time I made..Thanks to Hetal and Anjua…Please continue the good work.

  16. Using spices and onion in the cooking (which we do on a daily basis!) makes the house smell like a restuarant, carpets & clothes absorb them too! Any idea how to get rid off this smell? I switch on the exhaust fan but it doesn’t help a lot especially when I am using fresh spices!
    Thanks!
