Papdi Chaat is part of the ‘chaat series’ for which we received a lot of requests…and rightly so. Chaat is generally sold by street vendors in India and is one of the most popular snacks. Papdi Chaat is so easy to make and can be had as a snack, appetizer or a meal. I have to dedicate this recipe to Suraj-ji and all the Chaat-walas who have fed me awesome chaat for so many years and still remember my chaat-consuming capacity and me!
Ingredients:
Papdi/Papadi – 1 pkg
Potato – 1 med sized, boiled, peeled & diced
Tomato – 1/2 medium, finely chopped
Chickpeas/Garbanzo Beans – 1/4 cup, boiled or canned
Onion – 1/4 medium, finely chopped
Yogurt – 3/4 cup, well beaten
Roasted Cumin Powder – to garnish
Chaat Masala – to garnish
Salt – to taste
Red Chili Powder – to taste
Mint Chutney – to taste
Thin Sev – 1/2 cup
Method:
- Add the desired amount of Salt to well-beaten Yogurt.
- Spread a layer of Papdi on a plate.
- Sprinkle Potatoes, Tomatoes, Onions and Garbanzo Beans over the layer of Papdi.
- Drizzle Yogurt with a spoon, evenly over the Papdi.
- Sprinkle Chaat Masala, Roasted Cumin Powder and Red Chili Powder to taste.
- Pour Mint Chutney and Tamarind Chutney on top to taste.
- Sprinkle Thin Sev for the final touch.
- Serve immediately.
Tips:
- For a healthier option, use Baked Pita Chips instead of Papdi.
- If you do not have time to prep the Garbanzo beans, the store bought ones work just as well.
Hi! I love and trust ur recipes ever since i tried out a couple and they turned out great!
Just wanted to ask….i’ve always remembered having chaat with moong beans…. Can i use them instead of these other beans in this recipe? So much faster to prep too!☺
Hi Tas,
Absolutely! If you prefer the sprouted mung beans, feel free to add them.
Hi do we need to black salt or does the chaat masala give the same taste. Thanks
Hi Sheila,
Chaat masala has black salt in it so if you don’t have it on its own, chaat masala should suffice.
Hi do we use black salt on the chaat or does chaat masala powder give the same taste.
Here in Zürich, we dont get Papadi’s in the Indian shop,(and i am too lazy to make them myself ;), what would be the next best option.
Hi Veena,
Whenever I get lazy, I use baked pita chips. They are a little more crunchy but they taste great.
Feels like this video was recorded ages ago! Just saw it on your website and decided to refresh my memory 😀 You both are pros now … keep up the good work.
Hi R,
Yes, we have come a long way since the beginning (thank God!) 🙂
It came out great! Thanks!
Wow! Indian nachos. 🙂 I’ve never heard of this before but then I’ve never been to India (yet.) I’m going to have to try this. I love how you are exposing me to so many wonderful new techniques and tastes. I love Indian food but the restaurants serve only the very rich dishes. I am loving the more healthy dishes you demonstrate so very well.
