Tofu is a great alternative for vegetarians and used a lot in Asian style cooking. In this recipe, we have shown a quick, easy and delicious way to make an appetizer or a snack with tofu. The crispy exterior, the soft, almost melt-in-you-mouth insides and a hint of spice, makes this dish one of our all time favorites.
Ingredients:
Extra Firm Tofu – 1, 14 oz package
Oil – 1 Tbsp
Soy Sauce – to taste
Chinese Chili Sauce (like Sambal) – to taste
Method:
1. Drain liquid from Tofu package.
2. Cut into large pieces and press out excess liquid with a paper towel.
3. Cut tofu into bite size cubes.
4. Heat Oil in a non-stick skillet.
5. Add Tofu and cook on high heat until all sides are light brown.
6. Sprinkle Soy Sauce and Chili Sauce and toss until tofu is well coated.
7. Serve hot.

Easy and fast tofu appetizer , vegetarian appetizer , indo-chinese appetizer,
Hi, I have a party to plan and this recipe looks great. Could you please let me know what brand of Tofu you have used and from which store you bought it. Thanks!
Hi Hetal & Anuja,
I am a fan of you folks 🙂 Keep up the good work.
Want to give a try at this Tofu stir-fry. Is salt not needed in this recipe?
Hi Kajal,
No, whenever soy sauce is used, salt is usually omitted.
Hi Hetal & Anuja,
This is great… Me & my husband have been trying out a few of your receipes in the last couple of weeks and they are amazing. Surprisingly all that we make is easy and comes out just right. This is sure motivating. Thank you and continue doing the great work. Truly love you site.
BRgds,
Shital
I have just found this site and have been watching your recipes for an hour. Thanks so much. Being vegetarian, it is so nice to see some new recipes that I can try.
Made this tonight – picky daughter and picky hubby appreciated the taste and my feet appreciated how easy it was. Hugs to you ladies 🙂
Thanks for the feedback ARJ!
For us lowly mortals in India 😉 for whom Tofu in neat little packages is not available in most of the supermarkets, I found this youtube video to make home-made tofu.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j29_ACpb4L4
I made a few changes though
– Since I couldnt get hold of a tofu mold, I used a circular seive + cheese cloth and a plate on top with some weights. Only difference is that I got it a big circular shape rather than the rectangular block
– I replaced the coagulator with lemon juice which worked just fine.
Btw, thanks for this great recipe. Simple and sweet.
Wow…never thought about making tofu from scratch but it seems easy enough. Thanks for sharing the video with everyone.
Awesome!! I never liked tofu before this much. Love it now. Thanks Hetal and Anuja.
Awesome, Ritu, glad you gave it a try 🙂
Hi ladies,
First of all, thank you for such a wonderful recipe.
I made this last Sunday as an appetizer for a get together and it was a big big hit. I thought of making 1 pack of tofu(to serve 4) but ended up making 3 packs :).
I also wanted to tell you that instead of pressing the tofu with kitchen towels, place the tofu in between 2 plates and put some weight on the upper plate. That way it is easier to remove all the liquid.
I fried tofu and added your manchurian (from the manchurian gobi recipe) sauce on top, it was so good!
Sounds great 🙂
Hmm… looks good…. I dont like tofu but its so simple and looks yummy …. I will try this..
Yesterday in our company xmas party this tofu was one of the favorites. I added some coriander powder on the mixture of chili sauce and soy sauce and i let it set for about an hour or so. And slice some cherry tomatoes to goes with. Some of our guest doesn’t like tofu at all but this one was great (they tried it thinking of chicken..hahaha). They even asked me of the recipes.
Awesome!
hi Can I use Firm Tofu to make this recipe… also for chilli sauce, Can I mix green chilli with a splash of vinegar?
Hi Bharathi,
As long as the tofu holds shape while cutting and stir frying, it will work. You can use green chili with vinegar but of course the taste will be different.
You guys made me a tofu convert.. great recipe !!
what is tofu?
Tofu is a soy based product and looks a lot like paneer but does not taste anything like it. It can be found in the Asian grocery stores or in regular grocery stores in the refrigerated section. It is a great vegetarian protein source and is used very commonly in Asian cooking.
Hi Hetal & Anuja,
I’d like to make this for a party ahead of time… do you know if i can fry and store these for a day or 2 before the party? they seem like perfect hordoeurves for vegetarians!
Thanks!
Hi Angie,
Yes, you can make them the day before and just re-heat them on the skillet with just a splash of soy sauce (for moisture) before serving.
hi,
Awsome recipe, i tried it today, and my husband finished everything. i tried with only half pack tofu. we liked the taste, im going to make this recipe on a regular basis from now on. so that we can add more protein without any fat. you guys saved me to provide tofu for my family, i think my son is also going to like it next time i make it.
Thank a lot.
gr8 recipe. i’ve made tofu many times and i hated it. but i think i will like this one. i will definitely try it.
Sounds good. Tofu is very healthy too.
Hey Guys , can you tell me what sambal is? Ta , PG
It is a Chinese Chili Sauce and can be bought at Asian stores as well as Walmarts or Targets.
You can substitute it with any chili sauce you you like and have available.
Inspired from this recipe…I used knorr’s green chilli garlic sauce with soy sauce… merinated the tofu for an hour in this sauce and then cooked it with the sauce minus the oil on the pan… We ate it with bbq veggies and burgers yum!!
Hello Hetal and Anuja,
I tried this recipe today… I added soy sauce and schezwan sauce… everything went well but the taste was bland not salty not spicy not tangy… nothing…. Is it because I have used schezwan sauce?
Hi Priyanka,
The combination of soy sauce and sambal provides the salty and tangy (and spicy) flavors. Since there is no salt in the recipe, you might have to add additional soy sauce to get the salty taste.
What the hell you both are doing with the hand… its looks tooooo odd….
haay girls, love you both.ienjoy all your recipes.i make tofu often.I cube it,pan fry it both sides with few drops of oil.make a marinade of soy sauce+rice vinegar+grated ginger garlic+chilli garlic sauce+drop sesame oil+pinch of sugar.Pour on tofu ,cook for few minutes till sauce thickens.Goes well with rice,+++protein.Similar to your recipe.
Hey Hetal & Anuja,
Looks delicious! Can we replace tofu with paneer? And ofcourse add some chutneys instead of soy sauce. What do u think?
Hi Mona,
You could replace the tofu with paneer, but then you’d lose the health benefits :). Check out our recipe for “Roasted Chutney Paneer”….you’d like that!
