Chicken Doh Pyaza is traditionally a very long and tedious recipe but this great short and easy version makes it possible in our busy lives. It is absolutely delicious and one of my family’s favorites.
Ingredients:
Onions – 4 (Medium size)
Chicken –2 lbs (bite size pieces)
Garlic –3 cloves
Ginger– 2 tbsp
Yogurt –2 cups
Green Chilies – optional
Salt – to taste
Garam Masala – 1 heaping tsp
Coriander Powder –1 tsp
Cumin Powder – 1 tsp
Red chili Powder – to taste/optional
Tomatoes – 2 large
Fresh Cilantro – 3 sprigs
Method:
- Prep by chopping the following finely: 2 Onions, Green Chilies, Ginger and Garlic.
- In a pressure cooker, add the following: chopped Onions, washed Meat, Garlic, Ginger, beaten Yogurt, Green Chilies, Salt, Garam Masala, Coriander, Cumin and Red Chili Powders.
- Add in 1-cup water and mix well.
- Pressure cook on high heat for 2 whistles.
- After pressure is gone, open cooker and add the rest of the Onions (sliced) and the Tomatoes (chopped).
- Cook uncovered on medium heat till the meat is done (approximately 10 mins). Cook longer if you like thicker gravy.
- Garnish with chopped Cilantro and serve.
- Serves 4-6
Tips:
1. Chicken tends to cook really fast so if you do like thick gravy – take out the chicken pieces, thicken the gravy and then add the chicken back in.
2. For a variation to this recipe, use Goat or Beef instead of Chicken. See Mutton Doh Pyaza.
Do not try this. This recipe without oil or turmeric (that I realized later) will make the worst dish of your life. I had become a fan of Hetal and Anuja after a friend sent me the link. The butter chicken that I made following their recipe was better than the Mumbai Delhi Darbaar butter chicken that I had fond memories of.
Hetal and Anuja, please filter out the bad recipes before you allow guests to post their own. Lesson learned, but at the cost of a wasted meal and pointless effort.
Sincerely,
Ash
Hi Hetal and Anuja,
I really love ur recipes, I have found so many that i have added to my cookbook because they r so tasty and easy to make, so thank you for all your wonderful dishes 🙂
I wanted to try this one out but i dont have a pressure cooker, how can i make it on the stove top?
Hi Salwa,
You can definitely make this in a pot instead of a pressure cooker. The water may need to be increased as it will take longer for the chicken to cook with the pressure.
Hi Hetal and Anuja,
I am a big fan of your cooking but the big disappointment came up yesterday. With full enthu.. i cooked this chicken recipe but it was not at all good. Please can u put a video for the same so that i can see how your chicken looks like as mine was horrible.
PLease dont be hurt by my comments as i dont want a single bad recipe on your rocking website.
I will always be loyal to your website.
I tried this recipe as well, and you are right it’s one of the worst recipe on this site! I think someone else has posted this recipe it’s not Hetal or Anuja’s recipe.
Hi Anjali,
We will look into this one, thanks for your feedback.
Chicken gets cooked in one whistle… how will it be with 2 whistles and further 10 mts of cooking?
plz show video of ths recipe
I add even whole garam masala for that extra flavor in mine.
