Moraiyo Khichdi – Upvas Fasting Recipe

There are so many Indian festivals (Navratri, Janamastmi, Shivratri, etc) where many people choose to fast. Since fasting (Upvas) does not necessarily mean going completely hungry, try this delicious recipe for Moraiyo Khichdi that will surely keep your tummy happy!

Ingredients: (Serves 2)

Moraiyo (Samo) – 1/2 cup
Water – 1 1/4 cup
Peanut Oil or Ghee – 2 Tbsp
Cumin Seeds – 1/2 tsp
Roughly Crushed Peanuts – 2 Tbsp
Sesame Seeds – 2 tsp
Green Chilies – to taste, chopped
Potato – 1 medium, diced
Sindhalu (Sindhav, Rock Salt) – 1/2 tsp or to taste

Method:

1. Wash Moraiyo until water runs clear, add 1 1/4 cups Water and set aside.
2. In a pressure cooker, heat Peanut Oil or Ghee.
3. Add Cumin Seeds and allow them to sizzle and change color slightly.
4. Add Peanuts and Sesame Seeds and stir.
5. Add Green Chilies and cook for 30 seconds.
6. Add Potatoes and Rock Salt and stir.
7. Add Moraiyo with the Water and stir.
8. Close pressure cooker and cook for 2 whistles. Allow pressure to come down on its own.
9. Open pressure cooker and gently stir to combine all ingredients.
10. Serve with Seasoned Yogurt (recipe below).

Seasoned Yogurt

Yogurt – 1 cup, well beaten
Rock Salt – to taste
Roasted Cumin Powder – 1/2 tsp
Cumin Seeds – 1/2 tsp
Whole Cloves – 2
Cinnamon Stick – small piece
Curry Leaves – few
Green Chilies – to taste, chopped
Cilantro – 10 sprigs, chopped

Mix Yogurt with Rock Salt and Cumin Powder

1. In a small skillet, heat 2 tsp Ghee.
2. Add 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds and let them sizzle.
3. Add Cloves and Cinnamon Stick and cook for 15 seconds.
4. Add Curry Leaves and Green Chilies and cook for 30-40 seconds.
5. Switch off stove and add Cilantro.
6. Mix and quickly add seasoning to Yogurt.
